Tryout Faqs

Since inception, the Houston Wildcatters has been a low cost, affordable organization for all teams. The coaches, uniforms, tourney fees, and practice fields are all covered by the dues. While many teams are completely free of charge, some teams have dues with a maximum of $350/month at the AAA level. Costs incurred for travel to attend tournaments, hotel stays, and other player-specific expenses that might arise are the sole responsibility of the parents.

The Wildcatters organization has numerous tryout locations around the city. It is highly recommended to participate in the tryout region located closest to your primary residence. This will reduce travel expectations for practices as the team practice field location will be in the general area where the tryout is being conducted. Players may register to tryout in multiple regions; however, if you make a team in a different region the practices would be conducted in that area. Please make sure you pay attention to the region-specific tryout information as they vary on both dates and locations.

Unfortunately, the dates displayed on the website are the only dates we are allowing access to our coaches. We do not conduct private workouts unless a player has already been in contact with a specific coach and the coach confirmed both interest and availability to observe.

Wildcatters coaches will contact you and extend an offer by November 22nd. If you have not heard from a Wildcatters coach by then the Wildcatters have gone in a different direction. It is critical you ensure all contact information completed within the tryout registration form is accurate.

While we understand it can be disappointing, we encourage players to keep working on their skills and passion for the game. Even if your child doesn't make the team this season, we wish them the best of luck in their baseball journey and invite them to try out again next season. Every player grows at their own pace, and we’re always excited to see progress and determination in future tryouts!

Each coach will determine the practice location based on the geographical location of the primary residence of the players on the team. The teams are required to have a minimum of two practices per week.

Each coach will determine the tournament schedule (frequency and type of tournament) with the families and the organization at the beginning of the season. Typically, there will be 2 tournaments per month. There are also invitation-only tournaments that will become available if the team is very successful which could lead to alterations and changes from time to time. The Wildcatters play in Perfect Game, USSSA, TBS, Five Tool, and other select baseball-affiliated tournaments and leagues.

Teams at each age level are determined by the amount of talent available to make a Majors-quality team in that region. For example, we might have 8 Majors teams in some age groups across the city and only 4 Majors teams in another age group. There is not a finite number of teams in each area.

On our website there is a “calculate your age” button that will help determine what the lowest age level your child can play. Please make sure to select the correct season in the drop-down menu to obtain the correct age. For example, 8 would mean 8U. If he is good enough to play up in 9U and it makes sense, we are not opposed to a child playing up. However, we usually recommend the players to play with their age group. Once a player reaches 7th grade he will be required to play their grade regardless of age unless he has acquired a reclassification. This will give the player the best opportunity to adapt to the playing distances as they enter high school. There are usually two grade-level exceptions on each team for many tournaments, so please double check with us at info@houstonwildcatters.com if you need assistance in determining the right age.

Yes, High School tryouts are for 15U-18U and occur in December and August. Please visit the High School page for tryout details.
