A native of Venezuela, Cartaya was part of the Venezuelan national team for three years and subsequently signed as a free agent to join Major League Baseball’s Montreal Expos; eventually, Cartaya transitioned into the coaching realm, beginning with travel baseball in South Florida, where he managed two nationally-ranked teams and won several World Series tournaments, a Cooperstown tournament, and several Super NITs across a period of six years; his teams also participated in the Elite 32 World Series. A number of Cartaya’s players went on to play for the number one ranked high school in the State of Florida, leading the team to five state championships in a row and propelling the team to be one of the 10 best high school baseball squads in the entire country. A number of those players Cartaya coached then played college baseball; a select few were drafted to the professional level and are now either in the minors or active on MLB rosters.
